What is Andelay?
Andelay means together in Amharic (official language of Ethiopia).
It is a non-profit humanitarian organization committed to :
- participate in the sensibilisation and discussions of the people of the world about the limiting beliefs that need us to come together to break the stigmatization and silence on menstruation related issues everywhere and specially in emerging countries.
- advance together to take action for solutions with the dignity and well being of people and our planet as a priority.
Why?
The statement
These very old limiting beliefs are oppressive and a loss to all of us: hundreds of millions of young girls miss school every week reducing gravely the percentage of female finishing high school; women are shamed and disadvantaged in many ways everywhere. This represents a tremendous amount of wasted time and energy. Add to this the hours spent to the fetching of water, the violence and sometimes the harassment they are confronted to in the process, the inaccessibility of sanitary products and often the absence of sanitation in too many parts of the world: so it is urgent to increase the number of people and organisations addressing the issue. Andelay intends to do its part with you.
Qu’est-ce que c’est Andelay?
Andelay signifie ensemble en amharique. C’est une organisation humanitaire sans but lucratif qui souhaite sensibiliser l’ensemble des citoyens du monde sur la stigmatisation et les croyances limitantes entourant la menstruation, affectant gravement la situation et la liberté des femmes partout dans le monde et plus particulièrement dans les pays émergents.
Pourquoi Andelay?
Nous sommes parties du terrible constat que les croyances d’un autre âge entourant le sujet de la menstruation ont pour conséquence l’oppression des femmes, parfois la honte, et bien souvent l’exclusion des filles de l’école plusieurs jour par mois, réduisant ainsi leurs chances de mener à bien des études secondaires. Tout cela représente une perte considérable de chances et d’éducation. À cela s’ajoute dans certains pays les heures passées à la collecte de l’eau, l’inaccessibilité à des produits sanitaires de base et parfois l’absence d’équipements sanitaires de base…
Il est urgent d’augmenter le nombre de bénévoles et d’organisations pour remédier à ces problèmes.
Andelay a l’intention de faire sa part, avec vous.
Where do we start?
First by connecting, communicating and exchanging with each other to create a community that empowers each other and together we can empower others ( events, conferences, festivals , interviews with people from all the continents).
We people of the world (Andelay, together) must increase the awareness of the drastic and unfair situation where still way too many girls and women find themselves disadvantaged in regards to the menstruation due to the ostracism and stigmatization they have to face encouraged by strong limiting beliefs protected by the general silence on the topic .
Our created community’ aim is to enable more girls to finish their education feeling empowered to raise above the stigmas and the sham, releasing the limiting beliefs. As well as more men and women advancing in supporting awareness .
The Andelay community will as well raise and collect funds to create the first affordable biodegradable reusable pad factory in Ethiopia accompanied by an awareness campaign and education of the populations on the spot.
We start in one region as a model to reproduce in other regions of the world. This long-term plan aspires to be one where we all grow and get empowered in the process.
Par où commencer?
D’abord il faut nous connecter, communiquer, échanger les uns avec les autres, afin de créer une communauté à même de redonner du pouvoir aux femmes (évènements, conférences, interviews avec des gens du monde entier).
Nous citoyens du monde, Andelay, ensemble , devons nous mobiliser afin de sensibiliser sur la stigmatisation et la honte qu’endurent encore trop de femmes de par le monde du fait de croyances limitantes sur la menstruation.
Notre but et de permettre à plus de jeunes filles de terminer leurs études secondaires, de leur redonner le pouvoir afin qu’à leur tour elles s’élèvent contre la stigmatisation et la honte et contre les croyances limitantes.
La communauté d’Andelay a également l’intention de collecter des fonds pour créer une première usine de produits périodiques biodégradables et réutilisables en Éthiopie, soutenue par une campagne de sensibilisation des populations sur place. L’idée est de commencer avec un modèle d’usine dans une région, modèle ensuite reproductible dans d’autres régions du monde. Il s’agit donc d’un projet à long terme, interactif, dans lequel tous les participants ont un défi à relever.
